About Education for Development
Education for Development specialises in the use of community or non-formal learning to address the needs of disadvantaged communities. Working through local partners, our learning programmes are developed from a detailed understanding of communities, gathered through participatory rural appraisals by local facilitators.
The main focus is on those individuals and communities who have not benefited from formal schooling; either because of poverty, gender discrimination, conflict or displacement, ill health or disability.
Our Work
We specifically aim to promote and develop sustainable practices in-country. We work with educators on all forms of learning programmes (literacy, women’s programmes, conflict resolution, capacity building, vocational/employment skills, agricultural extension, primary health etc), providing support through the training of trainers, curriculum development, materials development, and monitoring and evaluation activities as well as research and project design.
At the request of partner organisations, Education For Development has assisted with the development of learning programmes in Africa, Asia and Europe. We have developed literacy and conflict resolution programmes in Sierra Leone, South Sudan and in the refugee camps of Guinea. We have a longterm relationship with the Gambia Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, supporting their literacy and vocational training programmes. We support the transfer and sharing of knowledge and provide opportunities for partners to access learning and training opportunities within Africa and in Europe as part of organisational development and capacity-building.
